Purity

People often say, 'Animals are pure.'

I think so, too. 'Animals are pure.'

But at the same time,
I would doubt how they understand
about the profoundness of this word, 'purity.'

I had once taken care of four dogs at one time.

They were undisciplined small dogs, all of them female.

I could only take two at a time for walk
because they would get fight with each other.

So, it was always 'female battle'
before the dog-walking hours.

'I'm going!'

'No, it's my turn today!'

'You went yesterday!'

'No, I'm going!'

Their barking as if such quarrel
were often heard all over the house.

They always wrestled wildly.

All of them strongly asserted
that it was her turn to go out for walk.

They only thought about herself.

'They are pure. Animals are pure,' I thought.

*

I usually went down to the nearby seashore,
walking through residential area.

So small dogs they were, but they barked so well
because they were undisciplined.

When they saw children walking, they would bark, 'woof, woof!'

When they saw an old woman standing, 'Wooo, woof, woof!'

To see the same dogs as they are, 'Woof, woof, woof woof!!'

As if breaking the leash,
they barked and standed against people.

However,

Seeing a robust man, 'Woo, woof,'

When she met a lot of people, she would bark, '...Woof,'

And when she came by a large-sized dog...

she would go silent and staid invisible.

I would hug her, see her in her eyes and asked her,

'Are you a hooligan dog?'

She, with her round, adorable eyes,
wheedlingly looked at me.

Knowing that didn't work, she looked away from me.

'She is pure. Animals are pure,' I thought.

*

Every time I came back from walk,
I felt purity of the animal.

When two of the dogs came back home,
two others which couldn't go out started
to lap other's faces and bodies as if to say,

'Hi, you are back!'

'Did you have good time?'

'That's good for you!'

When they were leaving them,
they were fighting with each other,
mounting and biting...

They were barking so fierce with each other an hour ago...

They are already playing together, licking and caring.

'They are pure. Animals are pure,' I thought.

* *

People often say, 'Children are pure.'

I also think 'children are pure.'

But at the same time,
I would doubt how they understand
about the profoundness of this word, 'purity.'

* *

I once was teaching piano with many small children.

They all belonged to the society,
the world of children
when all the lessons ended.

Sometimes, there would be quite a quarrel.

They did not bully each other.

But they used very harsh word when they quarreled.

Such harsh words that their seniors or students
might develop school phobia...

Words that might hurt some salaried man so deeply
that he might take medicine...

Children used such words
when they faught with each other.

I, sitting nearby sofa, sometimes felt my heart ache
when I hear such words.

But at least they were not violent with each other,
I don't interrupt the fight and kept my eyes on them.

I suppress my feeling of scolding the child
who was bad from neutral point of view.

I was silent, and saw what was happening among them.

* *

'They are pure. Children are truly pure.' I think.

When it comes to children,
it doesn't take too long to realize this.

A mother brought a variation of cakes for children.

All at once, the children gathered around the big cake box.

Eyes sparkling, they look at the box
to choose their favorite cake.

I still suffer from resonating sound
of the harsh words of the quarrel minutes ago,
worrying about a child who were hurt.

However,
it was useless worries for the small children.

'Which one do you want, Tomo-kun?'
asked a boy who said the harsh words
and made Tomo-kun cried asked him.

'Oh...I want that one.'

'This one? OK, it's yours, Tomo-kunô'

'I'm sorry for what I've said.'

'It's OK.'

* *

There were the other fighting pair minutes ago.

'Chi-chan, let us share this.'

'Yes.'

'This half is larger, so, it's Chi-chan's.'

'Thank you!'

* *

Animals are pure.

Children are pure.

They have beautiful hearts.

It can be called purity.

Doubtless heart can also be called purity.

However, purity has other faces.

All of us have various faces.

Even such pure children,

Instantly express dirty heart,
mean heart, and unfairness.

They all have various feelings
exactly the same as adults.

If all the adults in the world including me

could learn lesson from these animals and children,

How much could this world be wonderful?

Purity means
that you can tell each other truth.

Purity is to accept others.

Purity is to stick at nothing.

Purity is to be good at forgetting things.

Purity is to be able to apologize.

Purity is to be pardonable.

If all the adults in the world

could learn lesson from these animals and children,

the world peace could be realized.

Purity means
that you can tell each other truth.

Purity is to accept others.

Purity is to stick at nothing.

Purity is to be good at forgetting things.

Purity is to be able to apologize.

Purity is to be pardonable.

Purity is to be nice to each other.

PS...

I finally could write down
what I had been always thinking
whenever I heard the word 'purity.'

The picture of the dog above
is different from 'hooligan dog' in this poem.
